Computer mod causes damage, nukes warranty

This month’s advice comes to us from Lori Boerio, a service advisor at an automotive dealer which she prefers not to identify. Boerio says a customer arrived with his one year old sports car, seeking warranty-related repairs for a problem with his engine. The customer purchased the vehicle about a year ago, and had recently started experiencing symptoms of a serious problem with his engine. Dealers warned of sub-standard East European turbochargers

Dealers and garages are being warned not to fit cut-price remanufactured turbochargers to cars after a series of engine failures following the fitting of units imported from Eastern Europe. Cummins aims to boost heavy-duty diesel efficiency to 55%

The big-rig tractor-trailer trucks that we see on the highway get only about 5.8 mpg of diesel fuel. In tests, the Cummins-Peterbilt SuperTruck—a U.S. Department of Energy-supported advanced technology demonstrator unveiled last year—achieved nearly double that number: 10.7 mpg. If all the heavy-duty trucks in the U.S. were as efficient as the SuperTruck, domestic consumption of oil would fall almost 300 million barrels, a potential $15-billion savings that would reduce the annual fuel outlay of the average Class 8 operator by perhaps $10,000.…read more…

Honeywell International Inc. (HON), the world’s largest maker of turbochargers, expects use of the devices to double in new U.S. automobiles by 2015 as tighter fuel economy standards foster an emerging market. About 20 percent of engines built in the U.S., Canada and Mexico will include turbochargers, up from an estimated 9 percent this year, the Morris Township, New Jersey-based company said.
